European Institute of Women’s Health
Brussels — women’s health moved up the EU agenda today with the launch of the European Institute of Women’s Health, CLG Women’s Health Strategy, hosted by Billy Kelleher MEP at the European Parliament.
Co-developed by 50+ organisations, including Menoglobal, this is a significant step forward. The strategy clearly positions women’s health as a life-course issue and a cross-cutting priority, not a niche policy concern.
It calls for:
• gender- and age-responsive healthcare
• stronger prevention and early intervention
• research and innovation that includes midlife and older women
• improved data, funding, and delivery models
Key moments from the event:
-
@Henriette Van Eijl (European Commission) outlined ongoing and emerging work touching women’s health, including non-communicable diseases, vaccine impact, AI in health, and the inclusion of women in research & innovation. Breaking silos was framed not just as necessary, but as an opportunity for competitiveness.
-
Melanie Hyde (World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe) reinforced the evidence: recommendations exist, but implementation continues to fall short. Investing in women’s health delivers clear social and economic returns.
-
Peggy Maguire (EIWH) reflected on the process behind the strategy — from the pre-election Call to Action to the relaunch of the European Parliament MEPs for Women’s Health Interest Group, sending a strong and urgent cross-party signal.
-
The Commission shared that the Gender Equality Strategy is scheduled to be adopted on 4 March, with partnerships, funding, economic data, and workforce capacity all in scope.
Congratulations to the European Institute of Women’s Health, CLG team and partners that helped bring the sector together to speak with one voice and advance a true call for political action. I was sorry I couldn’t be there in person to reinforce the focus on menopause, but we will be there to support turning strategy into action.
